Döner is meat seasoned with spices, grilled to perfection on a vertically rotating spit, and thinly sliced into tender pieces. The technique originates in Turkey—döner means turning or rotating in Turkish—and it's become popular all over the world. In Berlin, the large Turkish community has made döner as popular as pizza in New York City. Berlin has its own style of serving döner with a variety of vegetables and sauces in a toasted, pillowy pocket of bread. We decided New York City could use a taste of this unique, delicious, multicultural cuisine.
